You Don't Have A Work Problem. You Don't Have A Relationship Problem. You have a YOU Problem

One of the greatest disservices we do to ourselves is believing that our struggles at work are about work, and our struggles at home are about our relationships. We like to compartmentalize: work, marriage, parenting, friendships, leadership, health. We tell ourselves that if we could just communicate better with our partner, or become a stronger leader, or set firmer boundaries with a difficult colleague, the problem would be solved.
But people aren't compartmentalized like that. Neither is the nervous system. The one thing that walks into every meeting, every hard conversation, every performance review, every family dinner, and every quiet moment alone, is your nervous system. It's the lens you interpret the world through. Long before you consciously size up a situation, your nervous system has already asked its own question: Am I safe here?
Neuroscientist Stephen Porges has a name for this constant background scan: neuroception. He describes it as a process that happens beneath conscious awareness, in older, more primitive parts of the brain, evaluating whether the people and situations around you are safe, dangerous, or life-threatening before you ever get the chance to think it through (Porges, 2022).
That question shapes more than most of us realize. It affects whether you speak up or stay quiet, whether you trust people or stay guarded, whether you overwork or overfunction or withdraw or accommodate or try to control everything around you. It shapes how much uncertainty you can tolerate, how you take feedback, how you handle conflict, and whether you can stay connected to someone when things get difficult.
None of this usually starts in adulthood. These are adaptations. At some point, your nervous system learned what it took to preserve connection, avoid pain, or lower the odds of rejection, criticism, abandonment, or shame — and those strategies often did their job. They helped you get through environments that felt unpredictable or emotionally unsafe or just too much.
The problem is that the nervous system doesn't automatically notice when the environment has changed. It just keeps doing what it's always done. That's why the person who can't say no to their boss often can't say no to their mother either. It's why an executive who can't tolerate making a mistake at work holds the same impossible standard at home. It's why a counselor who's constantly tracking the emotional state of every client ends up doing the same thing with friends and partners. It's why a parent who avoids conflict with a teenager notices the identical pattern showing up with a coworker, or an aging parent. Different rooms, same wiring. Haven't we all heard it????..."neurons that fire together, wire together" (Hebb, 1949).
Interpersonal neurobiology, attachment theory, and the Adaptive Information Processing model (EMDR) all point to the same explanation: our present experiences get filtered through neural networks built by our earlier ones. Nobody walks into a new relationship as a blank slate. We bring expectations with us — about ourselves, about other people, about what it takes to feel safe — and unless those expectations get updated by new, corrective experience, they keep quietly running the show.
This is part of why lasting change rarely comes from fixing problems one at a time. You can learn communication strategies, leadership frameworks, conflict-resolution scripts, boundary-setting language — all useful things. But if your nervous system is still interpreting ordinary moments as threats, those tools tend to disappear right when you need them most.
Psychiatrist Dan Siegel calls this capacity the window of tolerance: the range in which a person can stay regulated, think clearly, and stay engaged with others, instead of tipping into overwhelm on one side or shutdown on the other (Siegel, 1999). Widen that window, and everything downstream of it changes.
Real change happens when the nervous system starts experiencing the world differently. Once regulation increases, the effects show up in strange, unplanned places. Conversations with your spouse shift. You say more of what you actually think in meetings. You get less reactive with your kids. Feedback stops landing like an attack on your worth. Boundaries start to feel like clarity instead of guilt. Relationships stop being about managing your own anxiety and start being about actual connection.
From the outside it can look like every part of your life is improving at once. What's really happening is simpler: the same nervous system is just showing up differently, wherever it goes. That's one of the more hopeful things about this kind of work — it never stays contained to the place it started. When your nervous system learns that conflict can be survived without losing the relationship, every relationship benefits, not just the one where it happened. When your body finally learns that rest isn't laziness, that shows up everywhere you go. When you stop tying your worth to performance or achievement or approval, you show up more fully as a leader, a partner, a parent, a friend — and to yourself.
Growth doesn't stay confined to wherever it began. It spreads, because you're the one carrying it.
Your nervous system goes everywhere with you. It's in every conversation, every decision, every win, every disappointment, every relationship you have. The people around you change, the responsibilities change, the environments change — but the one constant, the thing that makes healing possible everywhere at once, is you.
So maybe the more useful question isn't whether a problem belongs to your work life or your personal life. Maybe it's this: What is my nervous system trying to protect, and what might be possible if it didn't have to anymore?
That question can change more than a career or a relationship. It can change how you experience your whole life.
