How Do You Know You’re Ready for EMDR Certification?

How Do You Know You’re Ready for EMDR Certification?

There comes a moment for many EMDR-trained clinicians when the initial overwhelm of protocols and procedures starts to give way to something steadier and differently embodied. Your notes are less cluttered with scripts. You find yourself trusting the process. And then, almost without warning ,you realize that EMDR is becoming part of how you think, not just something you do.  You are experiencing the power of this complete psychotherapy and wanting to grow more fully into who you are as an EMDR therapist.

This might be the moment you think…..“Am I ready to get certified?”

In my work consulting with EMDR clinicians, this is one of the most common themes that surface and can sometimes be accompanied by self-doubt. So I want to speak to that today. Here are a few considerations I would offer to anyone thinking about getting certified in EMDR.

You’re Moving Beyond Protocols and thinking about the larger context of the human being sitting in front of you.

In the beginning, we cling to the Standard Protocol like a lifeline (and rightfully so). Over time, though, something shifts. You start to feel the rhythm of the 8 phases in your body. You can anticipate where clients might get stuck, and how to meet them there.  You might find yourself becoming curious about how you bring your personalized style to the Standard Protocol or how you might lean into different interweaves to facilitate your client’s experiences during their work.

Readiness for certification often includes this internalization—when the protocol stops feeling like a script and becomes a living map in your brain and body.

You’re Curious About the “Why,” Not Just the “How”

The clinicians who thrive in certification are the ones who start asking deeper questions. Not just, “What interweave do I use here?” but, “What’s happening in the client’s nervous system that needs support?”You begin to notice the somatic cues, the dissociative flickers, the moments of shut-down that ask for your attunement more than your intervention. That curiosity is a powerful signal. It tells me you’re ready to grow beyond competence and into confidence.

You’re Getting Stuck and You Know It

Yes, you read that right. Getting stuck is a good sign. It means you're using EMDR regularly enough to bump up against its edges in real-time. It also means you're ready to receive consultation that goes beyond theoretical into the nuanced, messy, beautiful reality of trauma work.

Certification isn’t about never getting stuck. It’s about becoming the kind of clinician who knows how to recognize the stuckness, ask for support, and move through it with humility and skill.  We ALL get stuck…..the power remains in our ability to allow curiosity to intersect with safe support so we can all grow.

You Feel the Call to Integrate

Certification often becomes the bridge between using EMDR and embodying it. You might find yourself weaving in your own clinical lens.  Whether that’s somatic work, parts work, attachment theory, or expressive therapies. You want to understand how EMDR doesn’t stand alone, but instead lives within your practice.

When you start wondering, How do I make EMDR my own without losing fidelity?... You’re probably closer to certification readiness than you think.

You Want to Be in Community With Other EMDR Clinicians

The certification journey is deeply relational. It happens in conversation—with your consultant, your group, and the collective wisdom of therapists who are also learning and unlearning alongside you.

I’ve been an EMDR therapist for well over a decade and an EMDRIA approved consultant working with EMDR therapists who are growing both in individual and group consultation.  It is SO rewarding to work with other passionate therapists who are learning to embody EMDR as a way of thinking and being.  Some of my most profound learning experiences were inside of group consultation because of the power of community and learning from so many talented clinicians in one setting.

If you're craving that community… if you're tired of practicing in isolation… if you’re wanting to be seen and supported as you grow, perhaps this is the call to look into your next growth opportunity.

A Gentle Nudge Forward

There’s no perfect time to pursue certification. You don’t need to know everything. You don’t need to have “mastered” EMDR. You only need a foundation, a hunger to grow, and a willingness to show up as a learner.

So if you're sitting with that quiet wondering….

Am I ready?........this is your reminder:The very asking of that question may be your answer.

And if you’re ready to take the next step, I’d be honored to walk with you. My EMDR consultation groups are a space where we lean into the messy, brave, relational process of becoming.
